Music department makes it big

The Jazz Band travelled to the University of Idaho on Feb. 24 to compete in the annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

The group will receive a score from two judges, based on their opinion of the group’s intonation, dynamics, style, phrasing, time, rhythm, accuracy and solos; overall placings have not yet been determined by the judges.

Sophomore Nate Miller was one of two winners in the trumpet category of the instrumental solo competition, and he performed in the evening at a concert in the Kibbie Dome. This is Miller’s second straight year as a winner in the trumpet category.

Several of Wa-Hi’s vocal students attended the Columbia Basin High Solo & Ensemble contest, also held on Feb. 24, at Hanford High School in Richland, Washington. Several students qualified for places in the state competition.

The results of the Solo & Ensemble competition are as follows:

Soprano Solo:
First Alternate to state - Cassie Dixon

Mezzo-Soprano Solo:
Second Alternate to state - Jordan Calhoun

Tenor Solo:
First Alternate to state - Trevor Kytola

Bass Solo:
Winner (will compete at state) -  Peter Hoffman

Soprano/Mezzo/Alto Vocal Small:
Winner (will compete at state) - Amanda Loney  and Caroline Blethen
